Even though Leitrim is Ireland’s smallest county, it offers everything from family walks exploring the gentle woodland and lakeside walks to the more adventurous hiking. Experience the majesty of Lough Allen and the wild uplands of Sliabh an Iarainn

The Shannon Blueway is one of Leitrim’s many assets. This experience can offer an adventure in itself as you complete the entire trail, but equally it invites you to experience peace and tranquillity through nature while making family memories that cannot be forgotten.

A series of on-water and land based trails run from Leitrim through Roscommon to county Longford. The water trails have accessibility for canoes, stand-up paddle boards and kayaks, offering access to over 100km of paddling area. The walking and cycling trails start on Ireland’s first floating boardwalk at Acres Lake in Drumshanbo.

Acres Lake Boardwalk

Acres Lake Boardwalk is Ireland’s first floating boardwalk. The 600m boardwalk, in the beautiful village of Drumshanbo is the start of a 6.5km linear walking and cycling trail along the Shannon Blueway from Acres Lake to Battlebridge Lock, near Leitrim village. (more…)

Drumleague Lock walk

This loop walk travels along the Shannon Blueway, ideal for exploring the river Shannon by foot or taking your bike. This 5km Drumleague Lock Loop walk starts at Battlebridge Lock and brings you alongside the canal to Drumleague Lock. After crossing the canal at the Lock, follow the trail back to Battlebridge Lock. Drumhauver Bridge Loop

The Drumhauver Bridge Loop continues straight here but you turn left, cross the bridge and turn left again to join the other side of the canal. Now follow the red and purple arrows as the loop takes you along this grassy canal bank for 2.5km to reach the tarred road again at Battlebridge. Exit with care, turn left, cross the bridge and turn right towards Battlebridge Lock and the trailhead. (more…)

The Leitrim Way

The Leitrim Way is a 25km walk from Leitrim Village to Dowra through vast landscape forms common to this beautiful part of the northwest of Ireland. Starting in Leitrim Village and following the canal bank to Drumshanbo. The route is made up of tracks old and new in its entirety, resulting in a fairly fast pace. The walk is generally more attractive if taken from Drumshanbo going north to Dowra. (more…)
